Thematic meetings

Building and strengthening the community foundation field - Berlin 5-6 December 2019

An opportunity to learn with peers and share knowledge and experience on the leadership and support required and offered in the community foundation field in order to build capacity, capability, connections and credibility.  There will be a specific focus on governance - considered to be a critical component that links these aspects of work together strategically.

Who should attend

Staff or board members of community foundation support organisations and / or community foundations that play a role in developing the field and have an interest in learning and sharing practical know-how about good governance and board development. Participation will initially be limited to one person per organisation.

Where and when

The meeting will take place in the offices of Bundesverband Deutscher Stiftungen, Mauerstrasse 93, 10117 Berlin, from 14.00h on 5th December through to 13.00h on 6th December.  Informal lunches will be available before and after the meeting and dinner will be provided on the evening of 5th

What we offer

ECFI will arrange and cover the cost of accommodation (in Motel One Berlin Spittelmarkt, Leipziger Str. 50, 10117 Berlin) and meals in Berlin for the night of 5th December.  In exceptional cases, where necessary, accommodation for a second night will be provided.  Participants will be responsible for organising and paying for their own travel.

December 5th

Morning arrival to Berlin

13:00 – 14:00 Buffet lunch and welcome

14:00 – 14:45 Introduction of topic and participants

14:45 – 18:30 What is good governance and what do we understand through it? How does governance relate to building capacity, capability, connections and credentials in the field? Session includes coffee break and some practical work.

19:30 Dinner, location TBC

December 6th

09:00 – 11:00 Presentation and discussion around case studies from Bernadette Hellman (Aktive Bürgerschaft, Germany) and Rucsandra Pop (Association of Community Relations, Romania) on their programs of supporting good governance and board development for community foundations in Germany and Romania.

11:00 – 11:30 Coffee/tea break

11:30 – 12:45 Group work: how could we apply the knowledge gathered in our own work/ context.

12:45 – 13:30 Reflection on the governance of your own organisation and conclusion.

13:30 – 14:00 Lunch on location
